ABOUT US
The mathematics department at Montana Tech is hosting our fourth annual CREATE Math summer camp for girls. Our two week camp is designed for 4th through 8th grade girls. During the camp, we focus on helping students connect a creative pursuit they enjoy to mathematics. At the end of the camp girls have a creative product that they present in a showcase. In 2014, the camp focused on the mathematics of music. Last year, the camp focused on the relationship between mathematics and origami. We had twenty girls participate in the camp. They created origami art that was displayed in the art gallery at the Butte Public Library.This fall, one of our mathematics majors was a participant in our very first summer camp.
OUR GOAL
The purpose of the camp is to help girls see the value in studying mathematics. Many girls make a choice at the beginning of high school not to continue their education in mathematics. This choice effectively closes the doors on many potential careers in science and technology. CREATE Math encourages girls to keep taking mathematics during high school and beyond.
This summer the camp will focus on the mathematics of game design. Girls will have the opportunity to create either a board game or a video game. We only charge $15 per camper for the two week camp. We want to keep the camp affordable for all girls in our community. Unfortunately, this does not cover the costs of running the camp. We need your help to keep our camp affordable.
WHERE WILL YOUR DONATIONS GO
$15 provides a scholarship for one girl to attend the camp for free
$25 buys one physical game design kit (game board, blank cards, and blank dice)
$50 buys two physical game design kits
$150 provides a scholarship for ten girls to attend the camp for free
$250 pays the half of the salary for one of our undergraduate student camp counselors
$500 pays for a 3D printer that girls can use to create pieces for their games
HOW YOU CAN HELP
By donating you can make the CREATE Math Camp accessible to all girls in Butte by allowing us to keep the price to $15 per camper (the price of the t-shirt). With your support we can help a whole new generation of girls in Butte embrace math creatively!
