Montana Tech has been competing in the Baja SAE (Society Of Automotive Engineers) Collegiate Design Competition for the past 5 years. This is the first year the team will be officially recognized as a club by Montana Tech. The team will be competing nationally against teams worldwide May 17-20 in Pittsburg, Kansas in the four events: acceleration, sled pull, maneuverability, and a four-hour endurance race.
In order to compete the team will design, build and fabricate a new Baja buggy, that meets and exceeds the regulations required by SAE. In 2016 Montana Tech placed 78th out of 94 and in 2017 Montana Tech placed 35th out of 107. The team’s goal is to keep the tradition of improving each year by placing in the top 25 teams overall.
To achieve this goal the team plans on improving on previous designs that were not successful while enhancing designs that worked, all while reducing weight.
Fundraising is critical to making our design a reality. the entry fee, parts, materials and transportation to Kansas and back is estimated to cost approximately $22,000. All donations are tax deductible through the Montana Tech Foundation.
